RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, COPING STRATEGIES, AND OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AMONG NURSES IN SAUDI ARABIA

This research investigates the correlation between emotional intelligence, coping, and occupational stress among Saudi healthcare nurses with the aim of boosting workforce resilience and well-being. Using a descriptive–correlational cross-sectional design, data were gathered from a sample of 210 registered nurses from three hospitals through validated self-report questionnaires. The tools used assessed emotional intelligence, coping strategies, and perceived occupational stress. Data were analyzed through SPSS version 26, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients greater than 0.80 that proved reliability. Descriptive statistics indicated that the largest percentage of participants were under the age of 30, female, and possessed associate nursing degrees, reflecting a young and diverse group of employees. Inferential analysis indicated strong positive correlation between emotional intelligence and effective coping mechanisms (r = 0.46, p < 0.01) and negative correlation between coping and work stress (r = –0.41, p < 0.01), indicating that emotionally intelligent nurses cope more effectively and have less stress. The results identify self-awareness, social awareness, and stress management as the highest emotional intelligence factors, and self-esteem as being lowest, suggesting the necessity of specific training interventions. Practical implications support the significance of emotional intelligence development and formal coping programs to enhance psychological resilience, prevent burnout, and enhance patient care outcomes. The research suggests incorporating emotional intelligence and stress management modules into nursing and continuing professional development to improve job satisfaction and retention. Generally, these findings highlight the importance of emotional intelligence and coping ability in fostering a high-performing and resilient Saudi nursing workforce.
