THE EFFECT OF PARENTING STYLES ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE OF ADOLESCENT STUDENTS  IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BUEA

Abstract

This study is focused on the effect of parenting styles on the psychological resilience of adolescent students in the university of Buea. Family as the primary agent of socialization that helps to shape the holistic development of an individual. However, parents adopt different parenting styles to intervene in their children’s’ development which consequently affect the children’s’ ability to recover from unpleasant experiences. This is very glaring in the university of Buea where many adolescents live away from their parents or live with guardians who exhibit different patterns in relating with them. The present topic was conducted with the aim to investigate the effects of parenting styles on the psychological resilience of adolescent students in the University of Buea. Three specific objectives guided the study; to examine how authoritarian parenting style affects psychological resilience of adolescent students of the University of Buea, to find out how authoritative parenting style affects psychological resilience of adolescent students of the University of Buea, and to investigate how permissive parenting style affects psychological resilience of adolescent students of the University of Buea. The descriptive survey research design was used. A sample of 2d00 students was used for the study and with a questionnaire used to collect data. From the analysis of the necessary data obtained through the administering of a questionnaire to students, it was revealed that authoritarian parenting style affects their psychological resilience while few said that authoritative and permissive parenting style do not affect their psychological resilience. It was therefore concluded that adolescent’s psychological resilience is affected by parenting styles. Based on the findings, it was recommended that authoritative parents should maintain and adopt more strategies that will promote the psychological resilience of their adolescent. Also, authoritarian parenting style should be discouraged by sensitizing the communities on the effect of this particular style of parenting on the psychological resilience of their children. Lastly, students should attain every seminar that can boast their psychological resilience rather than depending only on their parents for their mental strength and resilience education should be introduced in our schools.
